Do not starve the children of nature

According to writer Leonie Maistre, children in India are losing their ability to appreciate nature. Maistre observed her pupils during a recent nature-park outing, and clearly sees the link between daily bombardments of commercialism and a declining sense of imagination in the children. There's no longer room in their lives for animals, calm and silence.

Hiking boots aren't cool, according to an increasing number of young people in cities and suburbs. A recent California poll found 30 percent of teens had no outdoor nature activity this past summer. As one school principal says, "To go on a hike, to participate in nature, to just look at the beauty is foreign to them." The good news? Lots of organizations are working to turn that around.
